Calvary Pointers Morning Showers 31 July 2023 Devotional by Reverend Ajisafe Opeyemi - Finding True Happiness
Proverbs 15:13 - A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Happiness is part of God's design for mankind. you want to be happy? More than likely, if you asked anyone in any part of the world this question, they would definitely say yes.
People might talk about different things that make them happy, but people all over the world desire some form of happiness.
We like being happy because that’s how God designed us. When God created the world, everything was good. Adam and Eve were together, and the two of them got to experience full community with God.
They did not long for happiness because they just were happy. They lived in God’s presence, and they always experienced the fullness of His joy.
Now, of course, we know that’s not the case. We all have bad days and bad moods, but the desire for happiness never leaves. People look in so many different places for happiness, hoping that they will find the formula or exercise a routine that will bring them everlasting happiness.
But we cannot find lasting happiness in this world. The pursuits of finding happiness outside of Christ leave us empty. The joy in Christ is not temporal but eternal.
It is of an established fact that the World cannot make you happy. When people want happiness, they often look to material, worldly things.
We may seek happiness through relationships, money, or excessive things. Some people stimulate their happiness through drugs or alcohol, but whatever worldly pursuit people turn to, it will not satisfy their longing for everlasting happiness.
King Solomon towards the end of his life, he wrote of his extravagant, wild experiences in the book of Ecclesiastes 1:2 - Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Solomon threw big parties, had tons of friends, and lots of intimate relationships. From a worldly perspective, he had it all, yet he opens the book by saying “vanity of vanities! All is vanity” (Eccl. 1:2).
It’s important to remember that Solomon meant that all worldly things come and go. They are not eternal, and they do not last forever. Throughout the rest of the book, he uses the phrase “under the sun” to talk about the worldly pursuits of humanity, the ones that leave people wanting more. They are vanity.
Even King Solomon, who had all the money, power, and resources to have whatever he wanted, failed to live a life of happiness through material, worldly things. His problem was not that he didn’t have enough or that he did it wrong. His problem was that he was looking “under the sun” for his happiness.
What about you? Are you also looking under the sun for your happiness? Do you look for happiness in this world, in places “under the sun”?
Solomon concludes in Ecclesiastes 12:13 - “Fear God and keep his commandments”
While all the parties, the sex, the alcohol were “vanity” to him, fearing God and keeping his commandments were not.
God cares about His people’s wellbeing. Over and over again, His Word tells us about how Christ loves us and provides for us in many ways. Naturally, this would include emotional provision.
God wants you to be happy, but it may not look like you think it does.
Our joy in Christ is not consequential. This morning figure out your true happiness in Christ. It is not a temporary feeling that leaves once the emotional high is gone. According to God’s Word, joy lasts.
Good Morning!
