Calvary Pointers Morning Showers 28 July 2023 Devotional by Reverend Ajisafe Opeyemi - Blessed Are The Poor
Matthew 5:3 - Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The word beatitudes means having a blissful appearance and supremely blessed. That's the plan of God for His children. He wants us through our perfect humility become huge blessings in our world.
The beatitudes is the greatest sermon of our Lord Jesus on the mountain and He started with, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
What is Christ calling us to here? What does it mean to be “poor in spirit?” If “poor” means that you don’t have much, then “poor in spirit” means that you realize what you lack.
You know that you don’t have what it takes. Your hands are empty. You have nothing to offer. You only realize you need Him to function. John 15:5b“...For without me ye can do nothing.”
The poor being spoken of in this context are the spiritually poor. These are the ones who know just how spiritually bankrupt and empty they are without Christ in their lives.
The poor in spirit are those who know their need for God and so are hopelessly dependent on Him.
The promise that Jesus gives is that the Kingdom of God is theirs.
Imagine this - the inheritance of the kingdom is for everyone who knows just how inadequate they are on their own and for those are desperately dependent on the King for just about everything.
“Poor in spirit” means that you recognize your poverty before God. Jesus is not talking here about men and women in relation to each other. He is describing what a person feels when he or she is face-to-face with God.
“Poor in spirit” is the first mark of a person who knows and walks with God. You may be a multi-talented superstar in your field of endeavor, or you are a high flyer in business.
You may be a brilliant musician, a tech guru, or a political genius. But if you have truly met with God, you will know that before him you have nothing to offer.
In today’s world, strength, authority, wealth and power are celebrated and made much about.
Jesus turns the tables on what the world calls blessed and sets a new standard.
According to Jesus, He says that the truly blessed are the spiritually poor, the meek, those who mourn, those who hunger for God, the pure, the peacemakers and the persecuted.
That’s why this kingdom is paradoxical in nature. The least, the broken, the humble and the pursuers of God find a place in this kingdom where achievements, influence or having it all don’t count for much.
Jesus as our Savior gives us access into His kingdom and therefore opens us up to living an incredibly blessed life.
But I tell you, this blessed life is not for the fainthearted. Every human’s life is filled with ups and downs, highs and lows, twists and turns.
Life is unpredictable, messy and hard. In the Kingdom of God, blessed are the ones who know whose they are and keep moving forward towards their prize which is eternal life.
Nothing or no one can stop them in their pursuit of God and their kindness towards fellow men. Are you ready to discover more about God's Kingdom and all it takes?
Christ in us is the hope of our glory. The realization of our insufficiency will automatically magnify the all-sufficiency of Christ.
Good morning!
God bless you...
